Lane unveiling new recliner mechanism

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 31, 2003

Lane is unveiling a new mechanism for its reclining chair line that allows the ottoman to be closed without using a handle.

The new mechanism, which has a steel base, is being used in most of the new recliners the company is introducing at market. Eventually, it will replace the wood-base mechanism now used in most Lane rocker-recliners.

"The ease of use and the ergonomics are superior ... and it's certainly a much more durable mechanism," said Bob Young, merchandise manager for recliners at the company.

Young said the new mechanism is activated with a handle, but is "gravity driven" because the ottoman is controlled by gently pushing on the chair arms. In addition, the rocker is locked in place once the ottoman is opened.

Lane, which makes its own mechanisms, plans to phase out the existing mechanism over the next several months, he said.

Display stands showing the old and new mechanisms are available for dealers to use on their sales floors, said Young.
