Carolina Mattress Guild offering fire-resistant line
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 31, 2003
At The Market — Many bedding producers are talking about how they'll meet stringent new open-flame mattress safety standards being proposed in the state of California.
Neal and Kathy Grigg, the principals of Thomasville, N.C.-based Carolina Mattress Guild, are doing more than just talking. They are unveiling here a new Safe Dreams bedding line that they say already meets the proposed California standards.
"Carolina Mattress Guild is proud to introduce the new standard in fire-resistant mattresses," the company said in a statement. "We chose to embrace safety today rather than wait for a mandate because it is the right thing to do."
It also just might be good for business.
"We see it as a potential major marketing opportunity," said Neal Grigg, a former Leggett & Platt executive who left that company in 1991 because he wanted to run his own business. "We will show our customers and our potential customers that this is an added advantage they can have today to gain market share."
The Safe Dreams line of single-sided beds is offered mainly with a 660-coil innerspring unit by Leggett & Platt in a foam-encased construction. The line will retail from $599 to $1,199 and will ship beginning in early May.
The line is fire-protected with a VersaShield barrier from Elk Technologies. The barrier encases the mattress and is also used in the box spring. A flame-resistant thread is used in the tape edge.
Carolina Mattress Guild sells to retailers in the mid-Atlantic area. The company doesn't ship its regular bedding line to California, but Grigg said he believes a national open-flame mattress standard is on the way.
Kathy Grigg said that bringing out an FR line just takes the right attitude.
"It can be done," she said. "Other producers are afraid of change. We are not. You can't put your head in the sand."
Carolina Mattress Guild is showing the new products during market at its 67,000-square-foot factory, showroom and corporate headquarters at 385 North Drive at Business 85 in Thomasville.
