Rocking chairs become art at HPU
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 31, 2003
High Point — The furniture and art worlds collided here, happily, when members of the Arts Club of High Point University hand painted several wooden rocking chairs in the styles of famous artists including Salvador Dali, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
HPU has the rockers, donated by manufacturer Tyndall Creek Furniture, on permanent display in the university's new Hayworth Fine Arts Center.
The idea for the project came from Dave Witmer, national sales manager of Tyndall Creek and a High Point University alumnus. "The opening of the Hayworth Fine Arts Center is a tremendous achievement, which will give back to the students and community for years to come," he said.
Tyndall Creek, based in Wilmington, N.C., produces rocking chairs and casual seating. It shows in High Point in Plaza Suites, space 2-405.
