High Point — The Summer & Casual Furniture Manufacturers Assn. is adding a shade products category to its annual Design Excellence Awards program. The SCFMA also is revising the judging criteria and plans to change the awards presentation venue.
The shade category is the ninth product category in the awards program. The others are cast metal furniture, cast combination furniture, wrought iron/wrought aluminum furniture, resin/fiberglass furniture, rattan/wicker/woven materials furniture, wood casual furniture and complementary casual products.
The Design Excellence Awards program is designed to recognize innovation and creative product design.
The judging will be revised to weight the following criteria more heavily: overall design, marketability and product innovation. Previously, all criteria had received equal weight. The other criteria are construction, color and use of materials.
"The awards committee wanted to ensure that we are recognizing products that not only represent outstanding design and innovation, but that also can be commercially successful," said Joe Logan, executive director of the SCFMA.
In September, the awards will be presented in a new venue designed to increase visibility of the awards. Previously, the awards presentation and breakfast were strictly for manufacturers, said Logan, noting that the association wants to open the presentation to retailers and other interested parties.
More details on the Design Excellence Awards presentation will be announced soon, he said.
