Bernie & Phyl help out 'Friends in Need'

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 31, 2003

Retailer Bernie & Phyl's Furniture has donated furniture to two charities as part of its Friends in Need program.

The company gave two sets of living room furniture to the Friendly House Shelter in Worcester, Mass., and also donated two rooms of furniture to the Greater Nashua Visitation Center and the Young Adult Program of the Community Council of Nashua.

The Friendly House Shelter donation is in conjunction with a renovation project at the facility, a temporary shelter for homeless single parents and families. It can house up to 40 people at a time and has the only handicapped-accessible shelter room in the area.

"The Friends of the Friendly House came to us after being turned down by every other furniture store in the area and we just couldn't say no," said Bernie Rubin, co-founder and president of Top 100 store Bernie & Phyl's. "Their generosity and commitment to helping those in need is very inspiring, and we were happy to be a part of this ambitious project."

In Nashua, the Visitation Center provides a safe environment for children from a home with domestic violence to visit with a non-custodial parent. The Young Adult Program provides mental health services for adolescents.

Bernie & Phyl's Friends In Need program donates furniture to many charitable organizations and homeless shelters in Massachusetts. Since 2000, the company has donated more than $300,000 worth of furniture to Goodwill Inds.
