HomElegance sets 6-story complex

Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003

Furniture importer HomElegance, which bought the former Progressive Furniture showroom here on Jacobs Place, plans to raze that building and replace it with a six-story showroom complex.

The brick-and-glass structure will include an expansive atrium, a half-dozen condominiums on the top floor, and a parking deck on the ground floor.

"We want to raise our profile in High Point," said Joe Elmore, the company's vice president of marketing and merchandising. "With our new building, we think we can help make the buyer's market experience a better one."

HomElegance will occupy the second and third floors and lease the fourth and fifth floors to producers seeking showrooms of 15,000 to 25,000 square feet.

"There's a real shortage of space for exhibitors who need a showroom of that size," he said. "We believe this will help meet that need."

The top floor will include a 10,000-square-foot buyers lounge and six condominiums that will be owned by the principals of HomElegance.

The new structure will occupy the corner of Jacobs Place and Green Street, including a vacant lot next to the existing HomElegance building the company purchased last month.

Elmore said the first phase of construction will begin soon on a portion of the building that will, in effect, wrap around the existing structure. The existing building will be torn down, and the rest of the new building should be completed in time for the April 2004 market.

The existing building is a two-story structure with about 24,000 square feet of exhibit space. HomElegance's new showroom will have about three times that space, Elmore said.
