Dutailier acquires kids source E.G.
Jane Kitchen -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003
St. Pie, Quebec — Glider rocker manufacturer Dutailier has acquired Canadian youth and infant furniture maker E.G. Furniture from three unidentified shareholders for an undisclosed amount.
Dutailier said the acquisition will increase the company's annual sales by C$15 million to about C$100 million.
"Our strategy is to diversify," said Richard Fournier, executive vice president of Dutailier. He said the company already has customer relationships and name recognition in the juvenile industry with its glider rockers, so a move into case goods makes sense.
"The growth in the next 10 years will come with the juvenile business," said Fournier. "We just want to be sure we're part of it."
Initially, the two companies will retain separate names and branding strategies, he said, although in a few months they may look at combining the brands.
Fernand Fontaine, president of Dutailier, now also will hold the title of president of E.G. Furniture. E.G.'s current management will stay on, and Regent St.-Hilaire, formerly vice president of sales and marketing, will be general manager.
E.G. will keep its separate plant and headquarters in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Perade, Quebec.
"You won't see much change with E.G. because we bought it as a business that's actually growing," said Fournier.
At the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Assn. show in Dallas next month, E.G., which had not committed to space, will likely show some items alongside Dutailier.
