Leather uph. makers expand into motion
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003
High Point — A number of leather upholstery makers broadened their lines at market by expanding into motion furniture in a big way.
One of the largest motion rollouts was at DeCoro, which unveiled nine motion sofa and loveseat groups and six recliners. But other leather stalwarts such as Natuzzi, Elite Leather and American Leather also made their presence felt in motion.
"We're putting the same quality and attention to detail that we put into our stationary products," said Gabrielle Galardo, marketing manager at Elite Leather.
Elite and other leather producers focused on pieces with all-leather covers. No leather/vinyl combinations were used.
In leather showrooms, motion sofas retailing for $1,799 and above were the norm, while recliners started at about $1,299. Those prices are well above the starting price points for similar items from broad-line upholstery producers, but most of them use leather/vinyl covers or covers that have been cut and sewn in Asia or South America.
"It has been fascinating to see how our motion business has developed so rapidly," said Bob Duncan, chief executive officer of American Leather. "About 30% to 35% of our business is now in motion and sofa-sleepers."
DeCoro, Elite and American Leather also were among those trying to capture a piece of the fast-growing home theater seating market.
