Wickes sets California warehouse
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003
Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. — Wickes Furniture is opening a 573,000-square-foot distribution center here to support its existing stores and aggressive expansion plans for Southern California.
The company will be the first to occupy the existing warehouse building at Sixth Street and Hermosa Avenue and expects to be up and running July 1.
Wickes now services its 10 stores in the market through three warehouse showrooms, but "they don't have enough warehouse space," said Jeff Seaman, president of Seffner, Fla.-based Rooms To Go, which teamed with Sun Capital Partners last summer to acquire 34-store, Wheeling, Ill.-based Wickes.
"We're going to start consolidating more and go to a little more centralized distribution," he said.
Rooms To Go and Wickes recently announced plans to expand with more than eight new stores over the next two years in Wickes' main markets of Chicago and Los Angeles.
"They can do so much more business here (in Los Angeles) than they're doing," Seaman said, though he would not disclose current or projected sales in the market.
Wickes had sales last year of about $365 million at its stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Portland, Ore. The 96-store Rooms To Go had sales of $1.3 billion.
