Brooks hires Widner, adds BR line

Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003

Along with adding bedroom to its line and expanding its warehouse, Brooks Furniture has hired a new national sales manager, Steve Widner.

A 21-year industry veteran, Widner came to Brooks, a manufacturer of glider rockers and an importer of case goods, from bedroom manufacturer Oakwood/Heritage House Furniture. After heading various departments at Oakwood, he was named sales manager in 1987, a position he held until his departure.

Widner takes over the position from Gene Gathagan, who was promoted to vice president of sales and marketing. Widner reports to Gathagan.

At market, Brooks introduced its first master bedroom with two Victorian/nostalgic collections in a deep, warm brown oak finish and a warm brown cherry finish. The bedrooms, in solids and veneers imported from China, feature wood sides and bottoms on drawers, wood-on-wood guides, dust-proofing and dovetailed joints.

Both groups include king and queen beds, dresser, mirror chest, armoire and nightstand, and retail from $2,999 to $3,999 depending on piece combinations.

The bedrooms are offered on an open-stock basis and are available for immediate shipping, either alone or in combined shipments with Brooks' glider rockers and solid-oak dining room and barstools.

To accommodate the expanded line, Brooks has added 20,000 square feet to its warehouse, increasing its total manufacturing and warehouse space in Tazewell, Tenn., to 200,000 square feet.
