Leggett & Platt creates Adjustable Bed Division
David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003
Carthage, Mo. — Leggett & Platt has created an Adjustable Bed Division to serve the rapidly growing market for adjustable beds.
These products, once viewed as suitable mainly for aging consumers, now are increasingly purchased by younger consumers.
L&P's new division will design, manufacture and market the company's adjustable bed product line. Mike Newman has been named president of the division.
Jimmy Grimes has been appointed division vice president of sales; Robert Oexman is division vice president of marketing; Tom Long is division vice president of operations; and Scott Creson is division controller.
All five executives are longtime Leggett employees familiar with the products and the markets served.
Chris Brust, Howard Lapidus, Scott Mansfield and Larry Shinkle retain their current responsibilities as sales managers and will report to Grimes.
Terry Bowen, president of L&P's Consumer Products Unit, said, "Over the last several years, the adjustable bed category has experienced very significant growth, in both product development and consumer demand.... We have created this new infrastructure to focus exclusively on this exciting opportunity."
Said Newman, "Leggett's extensive research and marketing experience in the category certainly support the recent increased consumer demand. Three years ago, survey results indicated that 76% of adjustable beds were purchased for health reasons. A more recent survey concluded that 67% of the adjustable beds purchased during 2002 were purchased by consumers who expressed a 'lifestyle' preference to own a bed that featured an adjustable bed base.
"The market for adjustable bed products — the number of bed bases retailed — during the same three-year span increased 65%," Newman said.
Leggett & Platt's Consumer Products Unit, of which the Adjustable Bed Division is a part, makes and markets bedding support products, ornamental beds and coated fabric products in addition to adjustable beds.
