Natuzzi planning Brazilian tannery
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, April 13, 2003
High Point — Natuzzi is poised to open a tannery in Brazil, his first in South America.
The facility is expected to be operational in 12 months, and would not replace the company's tannery in Italy.
Meanwhile, the company is set to open a 160,000-square-foot Italsofa factory in Brazil next month, joining a Brazilian plant equal in size which has been operating since 2001. Each factory can produce 400 seats per day for Natuzzi's lower-priced brand.
Natuzzi's 150,000-square-foot plant in Shanghai, China, also for Italsofa production, is being expanded and a 500,000-square-foot Italsofa upholstery facility recently opened in Romania, replacing a smaller site.
"We are pleased our global vision is being followed by our competitors; it means we're doing it right," said Pasquale Natuzzi, chairman and company founder.
He believes Natuzzi's 2003 results will be close to 2002, which saw a 3% sales increase worldwide. And there's room for growth in America, he said, citing leather's share of the upholstery market here as 26% compared to 38% to 40% in France.
