About the numbers
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 20, 2003
Furniture/Today's exclusive imports/exports report is based on the dollar values declared by importers and exporters to the U.S. Customs Service. The numbers are coded according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and made available to Furniture/Today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Cynthia Myers, Furniture/Today's database coordinator, further refines the data to eliminate as much as possible all furniture not intended for household use. In some cases, such as miscellaneous wood parts, it is not possible to differentiate between products intended for household or contract use. Mattresses and box springs also are excluded.
The figures for 2002 are not precisely comparable to numbers previously published because harmonized codes related to furniture were added this year, most notably cut-and-sewn covers. Also added were metal furniture parts, leather for upholstery, and household swivel seats with variable height adjustment.
