Broyhill closing case goods plant
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, May 11, 2003
Rutherfordton, N.C. — Broyhill Furniture says it will close its case goods plant here this summer because of reduced demand for its U.S.-made goods.
The plant, built in 1965, has more than 575,000 square feet of space and employs 506 people. It will shut down July 5, said Dennis Burgette, Broyhill's president and chief executive officer. The closing should be completed by the end of the September, and the plant will be put up for sale.
"This decision is necessary to balance our domestic production capacity with the market demand for those products," said Burgette. "We must recognize and change with the industry dynamics." Part of this change is an increasing focus on imported case goods.
Broyhill said it will consolidate the plant's production into its 27 other facilities. Laid-off employees will be given first priority for vacancies at those plants.
