High Point — Does the name Gallery Furniture ring a bell?
The one-store, Houston retailer, ranked No. 47 on this year's Top 100, repeated the previous year's top performance with the highest average stock turns in 2002 (45 times) and the highest sales per square foot ($1,540).
The company actually saw total furniture, bedding and accessories sales dip a little more than 5% last year, which pushed its average sales per square foot down from the previous year's $1,640. But no matter. The nearest competitor in the sales-per-square-foot category was No. 22 Select Comfort at $841.
No. 70 Dial-A-Mattress was next-best in stock turns with an average of 36 turns, followed by Select Comfort, whose stock turned an average of 25 times.
Last year's No. 2 in sales per square foot, Rooms To Go, and No. 2 in stock turns, Rockaway Bedding, didn't provide estimates in these categories this time and Furniture/Today was unable to develop its own reliable estimates for them.
The median sales per square foot for the Top 100 was $282, based on 43 estimates calculated by Furniture/Today or the retailers. With figures for 46 companies, the Top 100 median was 5 turns.
With 34 companies reporting, Select Comfort led for the fourth consecutive year in the gross-margin category with a 62.5% average. Roche-Bobois USA, as usual, was not far behind at 62%, followed by Pier 1 Imports at 54.1%. The median for the Top 100 was 45%.
