Furniture Caucus meets this week
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, June 1, 2003
Washington — A newly formed Congressional Furnishings Caucus will meet here this Tuesday to study reforms to reinforce the slumping domestic furniture industry.
North Carolina Reps. Howard Coble, a Republican, and Mel Watt, a Democrat, are co-chairs.
In a joint letter to their colleagues, they said the caucus would bring together a bipartisan group of members of Congress with a common interest in promoting and protecting the American home and commercial furnishings manufacturing industry.
"We hope the Caucus will provide an opportunity to educate our colleagues and the public on the many issues facing furnishings manufacturers in the United States today," they wrote.
Twenty-two House members have agreed to attend the caucus session, with the largest contingents from North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan and Mississippi, said Missy Branson, Coble's chief of staff. Lawmakers from Indiana, California and Wisconsin are also on board and Branson expected the number of attendees to grow.
Although many of these states have a high concentration of furniture manufacturers, Branson said the caucus welcomed participation from all areas.
Tuesday's information-gathering session will include a presentation from Andy Counts, executive vice president of the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn., as well as an update on the Foreign Sales Corporation/Extraterritorial Income Issue.
The latter issue, related to the Job Protection Act (H.R. 1769), is focused mainly on tax incentives for U.S. export manufacturers, but Branson said a new proposal would provide tax incentives to all domestic manufacturers.
