One-sided Posturepedic to offer unibody construction

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 23, 2003

Sealy's new single-sided Posturepedic line features what the producer is calling the industry's first "UniCased Construction" in the mattress.

The new construction resembles the unibody construction utilized in most automobiles today, Sealy said. That approach "optimizes the performance of the Posturepedic innerspring by creating a stable feel, and providing uniform comfort across the entire mattress," the company said.

The eagerly awaited Posturepedic line, Sealy's first branded offering with a one-sided design, debuts at the High Point market next week. It will be rolled out to retailers this summer.

"The new Sealy Posturepedic was developed after extensive product development and consumer research, and we are extremely excited about this great new line," said Dave McIlquham, Sealy's president and chief executive officer.

"Sealy has thermo-bonded our internal edge support and base to create a stable, integrated unit around the innerspring," he said. "The end result is a new design that creates the most comfortable bed available. You can feel the difference as soon as you lie down on it."

Sealy's research and development team spent more than a year developing the new design, one that Sealy says delivers the performance and attributes consumers want most in a mattress.

The new Posturepedic provides orthopedically correct back support, a key Sealy selling point, as well as these new features:

  • UniCased Construction, the heart of Sealy's "breakthrough design." It is a new way to construct a mattress to enhance the performance of the Posturepedic innerspring and provide uniform comfort from edge to edge.

  • UniCased Edge. By locking the foam edge support into the innerspring, the seating edge around the entire mattress is consistently firm, Sealy said. Unlike mattresses using foam panels or heavier-gauge rows of coils to bolster the edge, neither comfort nor support is sacrificed around the perimeter, according to the company.

  • Shock Abzzorber Plus box spring. This absorbs pressure and weight to extend the "comfort life" of the mattress. It has 20% more steel modules than the Shock Abzzorber on current Posturepedic models.

Sealy said it also will introduce a collection of new Sealy Posturepedic Luxury models. Described as offering "the ultimate in comfort and support," the Luxury collection features the UniCased Construction, as well as an upgraded Posturepedic innerspring and the Dual Steel Shock Abzzorber.

The company will support the new line with an extensive array of point-of-sale materials, "It's a Sealy" television commercials broadcast nationally through the peak selling season, and new retail advertising support programs for print and television.
