Benton named Powell president
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, March 23, 2003
Culver City, Calif. — Bill Benton, a veteran furniture industry marketing and merchandising executive, has been named president of importer Powell Co.
Benton, who will begin his new job April 1, had been president of import specialist Avalon Professional Worldwide since July 2001.
He earlier spent more than 30 years in senior management posts at retailers Levitz Furniture and Roberds.
"I have had the opportunity over the past 30 years to work with the Powell Company on a number of different levels," Benton said, "and I am looking forward to joining an organization with such a strong reputation in the industry."
Powell has been without a president since October, when Jerry Ruff resigned as president and chief executive officer.
Former President Rick Powell rejoined the company as interim chief executive officer shortly after Ruff's departure, and will remain in that post. Benton will report to him.
"We are fortunate to be able to draw upon his many talents and his three decades of furniture importing and retailing experience to drive our business to the next level," Rick Powell said of Benton.
Powell said that initially, Benton will spend much of his time meeting with dealers and the company's sales force.
He also will work with Sean Slack, executive vice president of merchandising, on product development and marketing.
