Star's Schreiber is retiring
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, March 16, 2003
Houston — Mark Schreiber is retiring as president of Star Furniture here after seven-and-a-half years with the upscale retailer.
A replacement has not yet been named.
Schreiber, who soon will be 61, is moving with his wife Jan to Charleston, S.C., where they plan to enjoy the "good life," the company said. He will return to Star for brief periods to work on special projects on a consulting basis.
He helped lead significant growth at nine-store Star. Among other things, the retailer opened a 100,000-square-foot store in San Antonio and a new Houston clearance outlet. It remodeled and expanded its flagship store, added 170,000 square feet to its distribution center and expanded its Austin store to 80,000 square feet.
Also during Schreiber's tenure, Star was sold to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, becoming Berkshire third key furniture store holding in a portfolio that now includes Nebraska Furniture Mart, R.C. Willey and Jordan's Furniture.
Next month, Star will open its 10th store, a 100,000-square-foot showroom in the Houston suburb of Sugarland.
"Mark told me when he first came aboard that he wanted to retire when he turned 60," said Star Chairman and Chief Executive Office Melvyn Wolff. "I just didn't believe it."
Wolff called Schreiber one of the finest and most able executives and also "one of the nicest and most caring people on the planet."
Schreiber said he is not leaving to pursue other opportunities.
"Jan and I have built our dream retirement home ... and we are going to feel some sand between our toes and enjoy the softer side of life," he said. "My life at Star was as pleasant and rewarding as anyone could ever ask for."
