Intros shipping earlier
By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, March 16, 2003
High Point — Some big manufacturers plan to ship their April market introductions by midsummer, continuing the trend of getting product on retail floors quickly.
Furniture makers received commitments and purchase orders at premarket earlier this month and are moving forward with production rather than wait to gauge the reaction at market.
Making the decision to produce is easy for some because the new groups are additions to popular lines such as American Drew's Bob Mackie, Klaussner's Dick Idol and Lane's Eddie Bauer. Others gave key retailers sneak previews, including Bassett Furniture, Bernhardt Furniture and Magnussen Home.
Bassett showed its new American Hewn collection to the Bassett Furniture Direct stores and a few other retailers. The company also mailed out information on the new collection, including photographs of a few samples, said Scott Doyle, director of sales, Western zone.
The lumber already had been bought before premarket, Doyle said, and the collection should be ready to ship by mid- to late May.
Universal also is aiming for the end of May to start shipping the first of its new collections, with a goal of one new group shipped per month, said Stephen Giles, vice president of merchandising. The company has promised dealers that all the new goods will be sent before the October High Point market.
Bernhardt will ship its upcoming Talesai collection in June to a few who made early commitments, said William Collett, vice president of case goods merchandising. Other customers will receive shipments beginning in late August or early September. The second new collection, Arcadian Bungalow, will follow a month later.
Bernhardt has new standalone occasional table groups, some of which will be shipped before July 4, said Jeff Behmer, merchandise manager for occasional furniture and wall systems.
Hekman is introducing 130 SKUs next month with plans to start shipping many of the goods by the end of June.
Kincaid is aiming for midsummer shipping of new casual dining sets, as is Vaughan-Bassett with its new case goods group American Countryside.
Klaussner adds Dick Idol Northwoods and Dick Idol Woodland Forge this April, and plans to start shipping in early September.
