Town of Thomasville erects Dick Idol carving of founder

Thomasville, N.C. — A 10-foot-tall likeness of John Thomas, who founded the community of Thomasville, stands watch over this furniture city, thanks to artist Dick Idol.
The bronze statue of Thomas, in Thomasville's main downtown square near the Big Chair landmark, is the first human subject for Idol, better known as an outdoorsman and wildlife artist. The city commissioned the monument to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its founding.
"The hardest part was creating a true likeness of Thomas since only one very old portrait of him existed," said Idol. "I was pleased the way it turned out and was especially proud to be a part of this project since I grew up close to Thomasville."
Idol's licensed home furnishings lines include upholstery by Klaussner and rugs by Capel. Recently added licensees include Pacific Coast Lighting for lamps and other portable lighting and Cape Craftsmen for decorative accessories.
