Schuckert leads IHFRA; Smith, others honored

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 16, 2003

Thomas Schuckert took office this month as president of the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. on an evening when IHFRA recognized some of its top chapters and members.

Schuckert, the association's 65th president, succeeded Paula Shoemaker, who has moved to chairman of the board. Other newly installed officers are Terry Hollingsworth, first vice president; Mark Craven, second vice president; and Ray Isser, secretary-treasurer.

Thomas Smith of IHFRA's Tri-State chapter was honored with the association's top award, the Rudy. It honors the late Rudy Steltemeier, a respected home furnishings representative for 66 years.

In accepting the award, Smith said that no matter how much the world of furniture has changed, what remains important is relationships — the sales representative's strong point.

"The furniture representative today is as vital to the exchange of product as ever, and consequently IHFRA's value to the individual representative and manufacturer remains vital," he said.

Smith also cited the association's value as a placement source, an insurance provider, a lobbying organization and a contributor to charities.

He said IHFRA's most important program is the Certified Homefurnishings Representative course, the intensive training that "helps sell more furniture for the manufacturer and the retailers."

Also honored at the awards event as Chapter of the Year was the Tri-State chapter, which was tops among its peers in attaining membership goals, and achieving the best marks in the ratio of CHR graduates to total chapter members, IHFRA event attendance, and industry-related political and charity involvement.

Named Deans of IHFRA were members Mark Craven, Scott Goldberg, Elliot Reiff, Ken Lucas, Tim Palmer, Rich Fusco and Barry White.

The Dean award recognizes service and dedication, as well as action and devotion toward advancing IHFRA's objectives.
