High-end show plans August edition in Sao Paolo

Gramado, Brazil — With their just-completed February show here fully booked, organizers of Salao do Movel are looking to launch a version of their high-end show to the larger city of Sao Paolo.
More than 100 exhibitors have agreed to take space in the first winter edition of Salao do Movel, Aug. 13–15. (The Brazilian winter occurs during the North American summer.) The show will be at the ITM Expo in Sao Paolo, with 150,000 square feet of space for furniture manufacturers.
Telmo Gomes, director of Sierra Park, which is the site of the Salao do Movel summer show, said the winter edition will coincide with a rug and accessories show in the city.
"We think it's time to take this show on the road," Gomes said. "We will be targeting the same group of retailers, designers and architects, but because Sao Paolo is so large and the airport is so convenient, we expect we will be able to attract some people who found it inconvenient to get to Gramado."
In its fourth year, Salao do Movel had 180 exhibitors whose showrooms were visited by 7,000 buyers from 19 countries. The Sierra Park facility was fully booked.
For 2004, Sierra Park officials intend to develop a fair entirely for those Brazilian manufacturers who sell outside Brazil. About 100 companies will be invited, and each will bring in about five buyers or distributors for this invitation-only event. "This show just has to be in Sao Paolo," said Andre Tissot, who owns Sierra Park with his brother Decio Tissot.
