February retail sales a mixed bag

Fort Worth, Texas — February results were mixed at furniture retailers Pier 1 Imports, Havertys and The Bombay Company. Revenues and same-store sales were both up for Bombay, both down at Havertys, with revenues up at Pier 1 and same-store sales down.
Bombay, based here, said revenues for the four weeks ended March 1 were up 34% to $34.1 million. Same-store sales rose 26%.
Pier 1, also based here, reported sales of $116.6 million for the four weeks ended March 1, up 3.4%, with same-store sales down 5.8%. Fourth-quarter sales were up 8.9% to $521 million from $478.6 million a year earlier. Same-store sales for the quarter were up 0.9%. Sales for the year rose 13.3%, with same-store sales up 4.7%.
Atlanta-based Havertys said February sales were $56.7 million, off 3.6% from February 2002. Same-store sales for the month dropped 9.3%.
