Lexington Home Brands closing Plant 12
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 9, 2003
Lexington, N.C. — Lexington Home Brands will close its Plant 12 here later this year and lay off as many as 350 workers because of the sluggish economy and the increased use of imports in its line, the company said.
The company also said it already has laid off another 40 employees at headquarters here.
"In order to more aggressively pursue our marketing and product efforts, it is necessary to evaluate and make changes to how we allocate our resources, both financial and human," said Bob Stec, Lexington's chief executive officer.
Lexington now imports about half its products. The company has closed four other plants since September 2001, and after the latest shutdown will operate three plants in Lexington and one in Hickory, N.C.
The company said it will start phasing out production at the 350,000-square-foot Plant 12 in late April or early May and intends to close it at the end of May. The 50-year-old factory once was part of the former Dixie Furniture Co., founded in 1901, a predecessor of Lexington.
Lexington was purchased last April by a management team and Sun Capital Partners of Boca Raton, Fla.
