NHFA to honor Masin, Lipton
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 2, 2003
High Point — Bob Masin of Masins Furniture & Interiors in Seattle and Ian Lipton of Hazelton, Pa.-based Nathan's Furniture will be honored as the National Home Furnishings Assn.'s Retailers of the Year at a gala at the April furniture market here.
A panel of industry judges chose the two on the basis of their contributions to the industry, community involvement and leadership.
Masin, a former NHFA president, was the winner for retailers with sales of more than $10 million. In 2001, the third-generation president guided his company safely through two disasters — an earthquake that damaged its downtown Seattle store and a fire that destroyed its Bellevue, Wash., unit.
Masins survived without laying off any employees. It is now building a new Bellevue store which should be open in September, and will begin rebuilding and remodeling its Seattle store later this year.
Lipton, chief executive officer of midpriced Nathan's, with stores in Hazelton and Pottsville in northeast Pennsylvania, won for smaller retailers. His achievements included the creation of a four-week consumer program on the "Art of Home Decorating" and tie-in and referral programs with real estate agencies and other groups.
His extensive community involvement has included work with food banks and the creation of the Sol Lipton Scholarship Foundation, which has raised more than $300,000 in memory of his father.
Masin and Lipton will be honored at an April 3 gala in the ballroom of the International Home Furnishings Center, held in conjunction with the International Home Furnishings Representative Assn., which also will present awards.
