Top furniture buys

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2003

Topping shopping lists this year are a new mattress and master bedroom furniture. Bedding, in fact, has been No. 1 on the plan-to-buy list in all three of Furniture/Today's consumer buying practices surveys.

Also high on shopping lists for 2003 are these perennial favorites: stationary sofas, recliners and entertainment centers.

All told, American households have budgeted about $37 billion to purchase the five products at the top of their shopping lists this year.

Even more households are shopping for accessories, particularly area rugs, lamps and wall décor. Dropping off many shopping lists are desks and other home office furniture. Desks were among the most frequently purchased furniture products in 1997, 2000 and 2002.
