Other adult bedroom
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2003
It's not as glamorous as master bedroom and not as much fun as youth bedroom, but shouldn't be ignored. In 2003, American households are planning to spend almost $2 billion on their home's "other" adult bedroom, up to $7,500 each. Most often, however, households are planning to spend $500 on furniture for the second bedroom.
Overall, 1.7% of U.S. households — about 1.9 million — plan to buy other adult bedroom furniture this year. As with master bedroom, they may be buying one piece or several.
There are a number of groups that are planning to purchase other adult bedroom furniture in 2003 at a rate higher than their proportion in the population. For example, African-American households are 2.4 times more likely to shop for second bedroom furniture; they account for 17% of the households planning to purchase the category. They have budgeted a median of $500 — $100 higher than the national median of $400.
By age group, the under-25's have the highest plan-to-buy index, planning to buy at a rate 2 times higher than their presence in the U.S. population. These young households have a median budget of $300.
By income level, it's those with incomes of $125,000 or more that have the highest plan-to-buy index. They account for 10% of the households planning to purchase other adult bedroom furniture. Their budget for other adult bedroom ranges from under $30 to a high of $3,000, with a median of $700.
At the other end of the spectrum, households that earn under $20,000 make up nearly one-fourth of those planning to buy the category. Their planned budget is predictably smaller, a median of $200.
One-half of the households planning to buy are married and plan to spend a median of $450 on their second bedroom purchase. Three-fourths live in a house and another 15% live in an apartment. A full two-thirds own or are buying their home.
Households in the West and South are slightly more likely to be shopping for the second bedroom this year. While the national median amount budgeted for this category is $400, households in the South, Northeast and Midwest have budgeted a median of $500 and households in the West plan to spend the least, a median of $300.
