Motion sofas

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2003

Motion sofas are most popular with under-25 households. This group has the highest plan-to-buy index, with purchasing plans two-and-a-half times their number in the population. But their motion sofa budget is a median of $700, less than the overall national median of $900.

About one-fourth of households planning to buy a motion sofa also plan to buy a recliner. Households with both products on their shopping lists have budgeted a median of $900 for the motion sofa and a median of $400 for the recliner. Among the under-25 set, 27% of households plan to buy both a motion sofa and a recliner in 2003.

Parents are also likely motion sofa shoppers. Households with children living at home are 1.5 times more likely to be shopping for a motion sofa this year than their number in the population would indicate. All parents — young, middle and older — make up more than one-half of the households planning to buy. Parents have budgeted more for their motion sofa than the average U.S. household, a median of $1,000.

Overall, 2003 motion sofa shoppers expect to pay less for their purchase than 2002 buyers. In 2002, 53% of households that purchased a motion sofa paid $1,000 or more. For 2003, only 48% expect to pay that much.

In general, consumers plan to pay about the same for either their motion or a stationary sofa this year.
