Mattresses perennially are at the top of furniture shopping lists. If all of this year's shoppers turn into buyers, the category could rake in sales of nearly $10 billion. Households are setting aside a bit less for new mattresses this year than consumers spent in 2002, a median of $400 compared with last year's $450 median.
Young singles, young couples and young parents are the most likely purchasers of bedding this year. The deepest pockets belong to young couples, working older couples and retired older couples, all of which plan to spend a median of $500.
About half of households shopping for master bedroom and other adult bedroom furniture say they're also planning to buy a mattress. More than two-fifths of youth bedroom shoppers also are in the market for a mattress.
Master bedroom buyers have the largest planned budgets for mattresses, a median of $500. Those buying other adult bedroom expect to pay a median of $400, and those buying youth bedroom have set aside a median of $300.
