Decorative pillows and throws, wall décor, other decorative accessories

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2003

Wall décor, decorative pillows and throws, and other decorative accessories put the finishing touches on a room and offer tremendous potential for add-on sales.

Wall décor is part of the purchase plans of at least one-fourth of the households planning to buy occasional chairs, occasional tables and dining room furniture. Other decorative accessories are part of the purchase plans of between 25% and 30% of households planning to buy:

Cocktail/end/sofa/coffee tables

Infant/nursery items

Curio cabinets

Dining room furniture

Chairs with no motion

Entertainment centers/armoires

Desks

Other adult bedroom

Youth/teen bedroom

Other home office

Kitchen/dinette table/chairs

Chairs that swivel, rock, glides

Master bedroom

While the number of households buying these finishing touches is large, the individual household budgets for the purchases aren't. Just over one-fourth of households shopping for decorative pillows and throws have budgeted between $50 and $99 for their purchases; just under one-fourth have budgeted between $100 and $199. Households buying wall decor are planning to spend a little more — about one-fourth expect to pay between $100 and $199 and one-fifth anticipate spending between $200 and $299. For other decorative accessories, the bulk of the planned spending is between $50 and $149 — slightly over two-fifths of households say they're planning to spend in that range.
