Futons gaining ground

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 23, 2003

Consumers are showing a growing appetite for futons, judging by strong interest in the Futon Assn. International's Web site.

"We are receiving 5,000 to 8,000 unique visitors per month," said Tom Tedesco, FAI president. "Consumers want what we have — the information on where and what to look for when shopping for futon furniture. It's all about communication and getting the word out about futon furniture products. That's why the Internet is tops."

The site — www.futon.org— contains a Retail Member Finder that lets the consumer search FAI's database by company name, state or zip code.

The FAI is headquartered here, where Tedesco's company, futon maker Devon Chase & Co., is also located.

"Our plan from day one has been to give consumers searching for futon furniture an easy way to find our member retailers, and our site does just that," Tedesco said. "The site is the best and most cost-effective way to both reach and direct consumers to our members' stores."

The site, recently upgraded, also includes information for association members and the trade. It has links to key industry events such as the upcoming Futon & Specialty Sleep Expo, set for March 2–4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It also has links to the association's financial statements and recent board meeting notes.

Tedesco said the futon category is doing well at retail despite an uncertain economic climate, and noted that the improved Web site will support the category's continuing growth.

"With a winning Web site, a popular show in Las Vegas and the federal government putting dollars into consumers' pockets with tax cuts, 2003 will be a great year for futon sofa beds and the entire home furnishings industry," he said.
