Roberts leaves BHFC for QVC post
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 23, 2003
West Chester, Pa. — Jane Roberts, former upholstery and leather buyer for Breuners Home Furnishings Corp., has joined QVC as buyer of home furnishings, part of the TV and electronic retailer's more aggressive push into the category.
QVC, which does a strong business in ready-to-assemble and other UPS-shippable home furnishings, has been testing the sale of larger furniture items. On its QVC.com Web site, the company offers a Maya sofa-sleeper with an air mattress for $1,139 to $1,165 and a Leather Bella Napoli leather sofa for $1,092.
Roberts began her industry career 13 years ago with the former Sears HomeLife, where she worked in various marketing and buying positions. She joined BHFC in Lancaster, Pa., in 1999. Her replacement there has not been named.
She reports to Rod Ghormley, QVC director of domestics and home furnishings.
Ghormley said QVC has been fine-tuning its furniture operations, including delivery and overall service to customers. The company believes it has a formula worked out.
"We're ready to step out a little more aggressively," he said. "We think we have a great opportunity selling furniture that is not necessarily ready-to-assemble."
Ghormley would not disclose projected sales in the category.
Founded in 1986, QVC broadcasts on TV 24 hours a day to an estimated 84 million U.S. homes, plus millions more in Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany through various joint ventures. It operates eight distribution centers worldwide totaling more than 3.8 million square feet. Sales in 2001 were more than $3.9 billion.
