Furniture industry foundation funds $56,000 in scholarships

Will support students pursuing careers in industry

Angela Heck -- Furniture Today, May 12, 2009

HIGH POINT - The American Home Furnishings Alliance Furniture Foundation said it has awarded $56,000 in furniture industry scholarships for 2009-2010.

The foundation was established in 1948 to support research and educational programs aimed at improving management, manufacturing and marketing in the residential furniture industry.

This year the Foundation awarded Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., funding for eight $3,000 scholarships for students pursuing a bachelor's degree in industrial design/furniture design with a minor in marketing.

North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., received funding for eight $4,000 scholarships for students entering the furniture manufacturing track in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department.

"Many students are seriously affected by the current economic crisis, and these scholarships are vital to their success," said Glenda Treadaway, dean of Appalachian's College of Fine and Applied Arts.
