HIGH POINT — Three seniors at the Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Mich., have won the American Society of Furniture Designers' David Kline Memorial Scholarship contest for 2009.In a presentation at the High Point Market, the ASFD and co-sponsor Hafele America, a supplier of cabinet, furniture and architectural builders hardware, honored the trio. Application kits were sent to colleges around the country, and students were asked to design furniture using Hafele's EKU Combino 150 and L40 hardware.
"We appreciate Hafele's continuing support of this worthwhile contest, and congratulate the talented and deserving student winners," said Dudley Moore Jr., ASFD vice president and scholarship chair.
Steve Hubbard, Hafele's senior product manager-Functional Hardware Group, presented the awards to:
- Nicholas Blair, whose Krieger Desk System won the first place award of $3,500. Judges admired the "cohesive design, which was well executed from design brief to finished product." They liked the system's "clean lines, with no wasted space" and noted his "exceptional use of the functional hardware."
- Jillian Stoltz, who won second place and $1,000 for Slider, a piece that can be used as a desk, sofa table or both. Judges praised her "great use of material and color" and said the piece could "fit nicely into a lifestyle catalog today." They also appreciated Slider's "great scale and proportion" and applauded Stoltz's "wonderful presentation."
- Anastacia Magnuson, who won third place and $500 for her Henrietta sofa table/sideboard. Judges liked Henrietta's "appealing aesthetic" and its "attractive mix of modern function with traditional design elements."
