HIGH POINT — Upholstery manufacturer Sam Moore Furniture has completed the American Home Furnishings Alliance's Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture program. The Sam Moore EFEC team generated more than $250,000 in savings to the company through the program, the release said.
The AHFA sponsors the voluntary EFEC program to help furniture companies evaluate their operations for continuous improvement of environmental stewardship. Sam Moore, a division of Hooker Furniture, completed the registration for its Bedford, Va., plant and offices.
"I commend the Sam Moore employees for their leadership, as they are the first in the Hooker Furniture corporate family to reach this important environmental milestone," Alan Cole, president of Hooker's upholstery division, said in an AHFA press release.
Hooker's wood furniture division and its leather upholstery company, Bradington-Young, also are working towards completion of the EFEC program.
In the yearlong EFEC process ending in March, the company reduced landfill waste by 1.8 million pounds, saving more than $40,000 in landfill costs. It also cut its water consumption by 6.3 million gallons, reduced electrical energy use by 3.6 million kilowatt hours, and used 344,000 fewer gallons of oil.
"Savings of this magnitude can only be accomplished when companies move environmental stewardship from a back burner issue to a corporate priority and educate employees at all levels about the real-world benefits of improved environmental performance," said AHFA Vice President Bill Perdue, who oversees the EFEC program.
Other manufacturers with EFEC-registered facilities include American Drew, Bernhardt, C.R. Laine, Fairfield Chair, Hickory Chair, Kincaid, Lea Inds. and Vaughan-Bassett.
