MGM Transport buys Byrd's customer base
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 19, 2003
High Point — MGM Transport has acquired the customer base of Byrd Motor Lines, a $4 million specialized furniture transportation company based in Lexington, N.C.
Byrd has served the Southeast for 75 years, focusing on less-than-truckload and consolidation services. Owners Don and Margaret Strickland are retiring.
"We are so pleased with the opportunity to enhance our service area and customer base," said Edward Massood, president of MGM Transport. "With our core service area being the East Coast, this acquisition provides MGM Transport even more access to the Southeast, thus increasing the density of our entire service area."
He said MGM has taken ownership of all product flowing through the Byrd pipeline, and the change should be seamless for Byrd customers.
MGM said it will offer expanded services to Byrd customers, such as Web tracking and MGM's Guaranteed Freight Program, which includes an expanded customer care department, a rapid-response claims policy and guaranteed on-time delivery.
With a fleet of 230 tractors and 710 Great Dane trailers, MGM is a $40 million company that serves two-thirds of East Cost home furnishings retailers and two-thirds of all U.S. home furnishings manufacturers. It is on the Web at www.mgmtransport.com.
