Steinhafels plans to broaden offerings with 425,000-sq.-ft. Pewaukee complex

Pewaukee, Wis. — Top 100 retailer Steinhafels is building a 425,000-square-foot headquarters, store and distribution center complex here that will house its largest showroom next year.
Gary Steinhafel, president of the five-store company, said site work on the 61-acre tract began in September. The $22 million project will double Steinhafels' warehousing and office space, now in the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin.
The company plans to move into the 260,0000-square-foot distribution center and new offices late this year or early next year. The Pewaukee store will replace Steinhafels' Waukesha, Wis., location, with an opening planned for the second quarter of 2004.
At 115,000 square feet, on the planned building's second level, the Pewaukee store will be Steinhafels largest and about double the size of the Waukesha store.
With added space both in the new distribution center and showroom, the midpriced retailer plans to broaden its assortment, but Steinhafel did not provide details.
Key suppliers to the chain include Palliser, Ashley, Natuzzi, King Hickory, La-Z-Boy, Klaussner, A-America, PeopLoungers, Lane, Rowe, Sealy and Simmons.
The third-generation, family-owned Steinhafels generated sales of slightly more than $80 million last year, Steinhafel said, up from $78.4 million in 2001, which placed the company at No. 73 on Furniture/Today's survey of Top 100 U.S. furniture stores.
