AFMA realigns jobs, appoints study group
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 26, 2003
High Point — After the departure of three longtime professional staff members, the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn. has reassigned some responsibilities.
In addition, a new committee of industry executives has been appointed to study AFMA's organizational structure and make recommendations.
"Since our industry has changed so much, so must our association if we are to effectively address the needs of our members," said Steve Kincaid, president of Kincaid Furniture and this year's AFMA president.
Co-chairing the committee are Farooq Kathwari, chairman and chief executive officer of Ethan Allen, and Stanley Chairman Albert Prillaman.
Other members are Kincaid; John D. Bassett III, Vaughan-Bassett; Alex Bernhardt, Bernhardt Furniture; Don Bottemiller, Homecrest Inds.; John Bray, Vanguard Furniture; Don Coleman, Hickory Springs Mfg.; J.B. Davis, Klaussner; Hassell Franklin, Franklin Corp.; Mickey Holliman, Furniture Brands International.
Also, Bruce Lauritsen, Flexsteel; Bob McCreary, McCreary Modern; Pat Norton, La-Z-Boy; Allan Palecek, Palecek Inc.; Rob Sligh, Sligh Furniture; Rob Spilman, Bassett; Tommy Tomkins, Cresent Furniture; Paul Toms Jr., Hooker Furniture; and Andy Counts, AFMA's executive vice president.
The committee will meet for the first time Feb. 19–20 in Atlanta, and again during the April High Point market. It will forward recommendations to AFMA's executive committee and board of directors in May.
Six AFMA staff members left the organization in December, including vice presidents Nancy High, marketing services, membership and decorative accessories; Larry Runyan, manufacturing services; and White Watkins, human resources, safety and public affairs.
Counts said the staffers left after the AFMA board voted to end an employee pension plan because it created uncertainty in the association's budget. The staff members chose to take bridge payment in exchange for their resignations.
As part of the transition, Bill Perdue will assume duties in human resources/safety in addition to environment and technical services. Cindy Sheaffer will take over decorative accessories in addition to media relations; David Purvis will be responsible for manufacturing in addition to information technology; Joseph P. Logan will handle membership and financial services, and the Summer & Casual Furniture Manufacturers Assn.; and Jackie Hirschhaut will handle public relations and marketing.
AFMA will continue to sponsor educational meetings, but it has revised its divisional meeting schedule for 2003. It plans programs that cut across the organization's traditional division boundaries and will typically involve more than one division. For a list of upcoming events, see the Industry Calendar on the AFMA's Web site at www.afma4u.org.
