Weare, Watton swap jobs at Sears Canada
Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, January 26, 2003
Toronto — Sears Canada has named Bruce Watton as national business manager/furniture, succeeding Dan Weare.
Weare, who held the post for eight years, has replaced Watton as national business manager for window, housewares and lighting.
Both men continue to report to Ashley Whicher, group vice president/home and hardlines.
Watton, a 27-year Sears Canada veteran, was a furniture buyer earlier in his career. He was in his last job for four years.
"The change has nothing to do with either man's performance," Whicher said. "Both are top-notch merchants and sometimes it's just time for a change. We just wanted to get a fresh set of eyes looking at the challenges faced by each of these businesses."
Weare oversaw the rollout of Sears' freestanding furniture and appliance network, which now has some 42 units with several more set to open this year and next. "He played a key strategic role in creating our off-mall business," Whicher said.
Watton said he looks forward to returning to furniture.
"Business is difficult but not bad," he said. "The challenge is how do we control what we have. It's all about generating sales."
Sears Canada is this country's largest furniture and bedding retailer with estimated sales of C$684 million in 2001.
