Design protection: an ITMA priority
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 5, 2003
Is our industry ready for the globalization that has already begun? Will we be an active or passive participant in this evolution of our business?
The ITMA, sponsor of Showtime, takes seriously its role in furthering the awareness and education of our exhibitors, our diverse client base and our future leaders. To this end, ITMA organized a roundtable discussion among industry leaders and subject matter experts that took place prior to the opening of Winter Showtime 2003 in High Point.
The presentation: "Pattern Piracy: Navigating the Seas of Infringement," met head-on the growing concern of protection of intellectual property. As "knockoffs" continue to haunt U.S. suppliers, a diverse panel of speakers explored the pathways that could lead to better control of this potentially divisive issue.
In addition, negotiations are under way for ACID (Anti Copying In Design) to accredit Showtime and become an active participant in enforcing the intellectual property rights of our exhibitors. ACID's participation in this role at the Decosit show in Brussels has made a significant contribution to the integrity of that event.
In addition to expanding our scholarship and internship programs, the ITMA plans similar topical debates at future editions of Showtime.
