Ethan Allen opens 1st China store

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 5, 2003

Manufacturer and retailer Ethan Allen has opened its first store in China, a 14,500-square-foot showroom with a lineup of casual and classic styles similar to the company's U.S. stores.

The store in Tianjin, 137 miles southeast of Beijing and China's third-largest city, is the first of three locations slated to open as part of Ethan Allen's agreement with Chinese manufacturer Markor Furniture International to develop a chain of Ethan Allen stores in China.

"The Tianjin store allows us to bring the Ethan Allen brand name and our high-quality products and service to the Asian market," said Farooq Kathwari, chairman and chief executive officer of Ethan Allen.

He added that the company is "in a unique position" since it will export approximately 70% of the case goods available in the store to China.

Ethan Allen now has 23 stores outside the United States.
