McCreary Modern fills sofa order for Camp David

Newton, N.C. — Custom orders from well-known people are nothing new for upholstery maker McCreary Modern here. They've make furniture for football stars Drew Bledsoe and Joe Montana, and for John Travolta and Barbra Streisand.
But the order that came in from George W. and Laura Bush was a bit special.
"We say every customer is equally important. But this one kind of humbled us," said company co-owner Michele McCreary. This month, the company, known for its slipcover program, shipped two sofas to Camp David, the president's weekend retreat.
First Lady Laura Bush selected the sofas at a Crate & Barrel store in Dallas and supplied her own fabric, a polished linen chintz in a dark aloe color. "It was just stunning; really, really pretty," said McCreary.
She didn't know who made the fabric or the final cost of the two sofas. But with all the powerful people who will be sitting on the new furniture, McCreary wondered if it might be good to cover them with the company's slipcovers.
The custom sofa carried a production tag reading, "For the President of the U.S., George Bush," which drew second looks from plant employees.
"One of the girls told her family and they didn't believe her, so she came in and made copies of the production ticket," McCreary said.
