Jiaxing, China — Components kingpin Leggett & Platt is boosting production of sofa-sleeper mechanisms with a 90,000-square-foot expansion of its facility here.
The expansion, completed in early May, brings the plant, a leased facility, to about 250,000 square feet. The plant primarily makes recliner mechanisms. The cost of the project, and the names of customers supplied by the facility, weren't revealed.
"We were space cramped and didn't have a line set up for sleeper mechanisms," said Arnold Berney, president of Leggett & Platt's international division for home furnishings components. "We can now make a respectable amount of sleeper mechanisms to satisfy our customer demands."
The plant mainly serves U.S. and European customers, with a small amount going to the domestic Chinese market.
Leggett & Platt operates four other Chinese plants that produce mattress innersprings, mostly for local consumption.
