Methodology

Most of the numbers in this report are Furniture/Today estimates based on a comprehensive survey of leading producers and suppliers.

Furniture/Today asked about 20 bedding producers to provide 2001 sales results that were verified by an independent auditor or accountant. One privately held producer that doesn't normally make financial data public — Serta — complied with this request.

Audited figures for Simmons and Sealy, both of whom report financial data to the Securities and Exchange Commission, also were available.

In cases where audited or verified numbers were not provided, Furniture/Today based its estimates on an industrywide survey. Each producer was asked to provide estimates for other producers. Also, a number of suppliers provided estimates. Approximately one dozen producers and suppliers participated in the survey.

The figures are for U.S. wholesale bedding shipments. They do not include international sales, royalty shipments from licensees, retail sales or sales of non-branded merchandise produced by licensees.
