AFMA sets 2 workshops on medical privacy rules

High Point — New federal regulations on the confidentiality of employee medical information will be the focus of two workshops the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn. is offering in December in North Carolina.
Employers sponsoring health plans soon will be required to have programs in place to safeguard that confidentiality. The AFMA workshops will provide home furnishings manufacturers with detailed steps for implementing the privacy rules.
The new privacy requirement was issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA.
The workshops are scheduled for Dec. 10 at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C., and Dec. 11 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Greensboro, N.C. Ken Carlson and Penny Wofford of the Edwards, Ballard, Clark, Barrett and Carlson law firm will cover the major issues involved in the regulations.
AFMA's Human Resources/Safety Division is sponsoring the workshops. Each will run from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $79 per person for AFMA members and $99 for non-members, which includes course materials and refreshments.
