American Leather adopts air pad packaging system

Dallas — Leather upholstery producer American Leather is adopting a packaging system designed to better protect its furniture while reducing material waste.
The manufacturer is the first upholstery user of the patented Fromm Airpad System. Fromm is a supplier of protective and void-fill packaging.
The system applies rows of individual air pads that utilize two rolls of plastic film inflated with air, heat-sealed and perforated.
American Leather has been testing the packaging for about four months. "We have shipped more than 1,000 pieces to every part of the country, using various LTL and full-truck-load carriers," said President Bob Duncan. "The response has been very encouraging."
The producer first bags each piece of furniture in a 5-milliliter plastic bag, before placing heavy-duty cardboard endcaps lined with air pillows at either end for support. The entire piece is then enfolded in air pads and secured with stretch-wrap.
The Fromm system, made from recyclable material, replaces heavy-duty lined plastic wraps.
