4D's hollow-core boards a winner

High Point — Offering a substantial and stylish look, 4D Concepts believes it has found a winning program with its collection of ready-to-assemble furniture constructed from hollow-core boards.
4D, which imports flat-pack furniture from Asia, brought out its first hollow-core product last October with a series of bookshelves, available in veneer or laminate, and for this market, the company is expanding the concept to other product categories.
"It's caught on very nicely for us, and now we're going into computer desks, entertainment and closet storage," said Jeff Riegsecker, president.
Using the same board construction used for interior doors, 4D's hollow-core product is thicker and yet lighter than the substrates normally used in furniture, which offers two primary benefits.
"It gives it a thick, massive look, and yet the shipping costs less," Riegsecker said.
The new home-office entry in this program is a computer desk with hutch and half-moon monitor shelf. At the 4D showroom in the 220 Elm building, space 104, it will be shown in cherry, but it will also be available in maple or laminate, with the veneer version priced to retail at $199. The hollow-core entertainment center, built to accommodate televisions up to 36 inches, is available in the same cherry or maple or in laminate, at $399.
For closet storage, 4D is offering a package to fit a nine-foot space, including three rods, a shelf and two drawers, set to retail at $129 in laminate or about $159 in cherry or maple veneer.
"We're trying to offer something that has a different look, thicker and yet still lightweight at a very reasonable price," Riegsecker said. "It's got a distinctive look, but it's still a strong value."
