New at market: Area rugs

  • How high can it go?: It's a race for the highest density in multi-million point weaves from machine woven rugs.

  • How low can it go?: Prices on hand-tufted and Tibetan-knot rugs drift down to under $500.

  • Red is the neutral: There's enough variation in the hue to satisfy the traditional, transitional and contemporary customers.

AMS MS 390

  • The new Luxurious collection by Inner Asia is hand knotted of wool and silk, $3,250.

  • Tablero Nazca is from the Ayacucho collection of hand-woven flat weave rugs, $775. Also in custom colors and sizes.

  • Additions are made to the J&T collection of reversible dyed jute rugs. Made on a Wilton loom in Turkey, $175 in 5′ by 7′.

Aura FDC, 101 W. Green St

Exhibiting at High Point for the first time, this California importer is showing a preview of all the new constructions and collections that will be introduced in January

  • Pearl collection is hand tufted in a 70/30 blend of worsted wool and art-silk with 15–18 colors in each rug, $499 in 5′6″ by 8′6″.

  • Venetian collection is an Indo Tibetan hand-knotted construction in four designs in subtle tone-on-tone color, Stocked in three sizes for quick ship special order. Custom colors also available, $899 5′6″ by 8′6′.

  • Gazni collection features a unique blend of Gazni and Indian wool which creates a Peshawar look and feel at value pricing. Hand knotted, $899.

  • Afghan is hand knotted of 100% Gazni wool, using special chrome dyes that have the look of traditional vegetable dyes. Hand knotted, $1,599.

  • Joe Ruggiero collection features various hand-knotted groups designed by Joe Ruggiero. The rugs complement the life style collections Ruggiero has created for Norwalk Furniture.

Bashian MS 123

Bashian adds several designs to its Tibetan offerings. Hand knotted in Nepal of 100% Tibetan wool, $1,499.

Capel MS 112

  • Nepal Passage collection is hand knotted in China of 75% wool, 25% silk with luster wash finish, $1,875 in 5′6″ by 8′6″.

  • Additions are made to Tibetian Treasure collection, hand knotted in India of hand-spun, New Zealand wool, $1,247.50 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Shaggy Shag is construction advanced generation heat-set nylon in '70s retro style, $325 in 5′ by 7′.

Central Oriental SP 3300

  • Premier collection is a 1.5 million-point construction in densely-woven traditional designs, $399.

  • The Infinity collection is a two million-point construction with extremely fine pattern definition. In both classic and transitional designs, $449.

  • The Platinum collection is made of space-dyed nylon on Central's new manufacturing facility in Maine. Weaving technique allows for 32 colors, $399.

Central is updating its handmade collections, introducing a variety of constructions and price points from all over the world.

Couristan IHFC D-320

  • Taj Mahal collection features classic 16th and 17th century Persian styling power-loomed in Belgium of New Zealand worsted wool using Couristan's patented locked-in-weave construction. In million-plus point construction for design clarity, $799 in 5′6″ by 8′.

  • Everest collection is machine made of heat-set premium polypropylene in a dense weave with a soft finish. Power-loomed in Belgium in million-point construction, traditional styling, $239 in 5′3″ by 7′6″.

  • Visions collection is machine made in Belgium using 90% New Zealand wool and 10% faux silk. In free-spirited, whimsical design and sophisticated colorations, $399 in 5′3″ by 7′6″.

  • Super Indo-Natural collection is hand tufted of 100% natural, undyed wool in a highly textured cut and loop construction. Tone on tone colorations of taupe and brown, $400 in 5′6″ by 8′.

828 Trading Radisson Hotel

828 International is expanding its handmade collections and is entering the field of decorative accent rugs.

  • The Accents collection is a group of hand-hooked cotton rugs with design themes that include botanical, nautical, floral and traditional designs, $299 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Summit is 828's first hand-tufted collection using a blend of wool and silk blend. In traditional styles, $599 in 5′ by 8′.

Feizy MS 143

  • The Feizy Home collection features designs and constructions aimed at the middle and value price points.

  • The Verona collection of machine-made rugs is inspired by European architectural designs.

  • Monroe is a machine-made group of contemporary designs with textural effects.

  • Traditional patterns are featured in the Bent Tree collection of machine-made rugs.

  • The Sonora collection is a group of hand-tufted jute rugs that combine geometric patterns with textural interest.

  • New Persian-inspired designs have been added to the Rhine collection of hand-tufted wool and silk rugs. Their enchanting curvilinear patterns are unusually intricate for tufted designs and at times even appear to be of hand-knotted quality.

  • Venetian is a new group in Feizy's Fine Rug collection, oriented to the high end of the market. Intricate traditional curvilinear designs in classic Persian styling are featured in this group of hand-knotted wool and silk rugs. New designs have been added to the River Oaks, Traditions and Edmonton collections.

Foreign Accents SMS G-105

Kathryn Doherty's designs are featured in Foreign Accents' Festival collection of hand-tufted modacrylic rugs. Made in China in rich colors and contemporary patterns, $499.

General Inds./Fun Rugs SP 4555

The Fun Rugs division specializes in Kid's Rugs and whimsical designs for adults.

  • On the Move! collection, features several modes of "getting around," including space ships, school buses and fire trucks. Printed on soft-pile nylon base, $60 or less in approximate 3′ by 4″.

Harounian IHFC D-309

  • The Oasis collection features traditional Hadji-Jalili patterns in contemporary color palettes. Made in densely hand-knotted wool construction, $3,239.

  • The Royal collection re-creates classic Lavar Kerman and Kashan designs. Hand knotted in India of high quality, silky wool, $3,250

  • The Majestic collection is a group of antique reproduction hand-knotted rugs in updated color palettes, $2,375.

Hellenic MS-M57, Radisson Hotel

Hellenic adds several new shags to its growing collections.

  • Cotton Shag is hand woven of 100% new cotton fabric. Washable, available in six solid pastel colors, $249 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Denim Shag features strips of washed denim hand woven into a shag rug, $299 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Leather Shag is 100% suede, hand woven in India, $299 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Kate Ward Thacker designs based on shapes and space, the use of 70 colors from spring 2003 forecast colors. Hand-tufted in India of new wool, $499 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Essential Nature by Phillip Jaeger. Five designs based on Jaeger's collages using organic materials. Another four patterns have a contemporary Nepalese look. All designs color coordinated. Hand knotted of worsted wool, $899 in 5′6″ by 8′.

Additions are also made to existing hand-knotted, hand-tufted and authentic Greek flokati collections.

Jaipur SMS 1-400

Jaipur, known for its commitment to the high-end hand-knotted rugs from Jaipur, India, is introducing moderately priced programmed rugs.

  • Flatweaves from India are hand woven in traditional, tribal and Aubusson designs. Wool, $349 to $399 in 6′ by 9′.

  • Contemporary hand-knotted rugs feature a natural organic look in 14 solid colors with natural shading. Single-ply wool with a supple back, $995 in 5′ by 8′.

Karastan MS 120

  • Additions to the Original Karastan collection are based on early 20th century Persian designs. Imperial Kirman features the class "botah," or paisley, pattern Ivory Tabriz features a large scale field and wide border. An addition to the Original Karastan collection, Axminster woven of wool.

  • In Karastan's moderately priced Palazzo collection, Bella Fiore is an all-over floral on a black background, and Tuscan Hills is a pattern inspired by Turkish Ushak designs. Wilton woven of New Zealand wool, $499.

  • Antique Kirman is an addition to Karastan's Limited Edition collection inspired by designs in the Karastan archives, Axminster woven of wool, $1,199.

KAS IHFC D-301

KAS is doubling the size of its IHFC showroom.

  • The Dakota collection is hand woven of jute in Southwestern and Old World tribal designs. Antique colorations, $199.

  • The Hudson collection combines both hand-hooked and hand-tufted technique for a high-low textural look. Made in China of 100% wool, $399.

Lamontage MS 125

Lamontage products are designed by Liora Manne using a patented hand-crafting process based on felting techniques. New designs such as Sphere, Clouds, Zen wave, Wave Mosaic and Mini Squares are based on organic forms as well as ancient mosaic flooring designs.

  • Rivers Edge Collection is inspired by the blue and green landscape of America's coastlines. Machine woven of polypropylene, the designs feature a drop-stitch construction for textural interest, $399 in 5′3″ by 7′9″.

Momeni IHFC D-308

  • Indo Gabbeh collection of hand-knotted rugs from India is made from 100% New Zealand wool. Traditional tribal patterns are featured in this group of six patterns, $999.

  • Aspen is a group of five patterns inspired by the American Southwest and geometric Lodge looks. Hand tufted in India of New Zealand wool, $499 in 5′ by 8′.

Nejad IHFC D-343

  • American Home collection is hand tufted of 100% wool pile in contemporary and transitional patterns.

  • The Bright Rug collection is hand tufted of deeply saturated modacrylic yarns in relaxed contemporary designs.

Nourison MS 190

Nourison's design emphasis this season is on contemporary and European styling.

  • Hamilton House is machine made of 100% premium wool pile in classic Persian designs.

  • Ashton House is a power-loomed collection featuring European-inspired decorative motifs in detailed ornamental designs. Of 100% wool, $549.

  • New Legends is hand crafted of worsted New Zealand wool for a silk-like sheen. In traditional and museum-documentary designs.

  • Beauvais is a group of 18th century French designs in hand-tufted construction. Made of wool pile highlighted with faux silk, $799.

  • The Belmore Gardens collection features large-scale florals and organic forms, hand crafted of wool, $449.

  • The India House collection is a group of promotional hand-tufted designs in a wide range of updated classics and casual contemporary styles. Retail is $269 in 6′ by 9′.

Oriental Weavers USA IHFC D-319

Oriental Weavers expands its two Raymond Waites licensed lines.

  • Vintage features animal prints, florals and contemporary patterns. Woven of heat set polypropylene, $299.

  • Vintage Court is woven of OW's patented nylene yarn system, $399.

Aiming at the value-oriented part of the market, Sakara is woven of heat set polypropylene in high-density pile. The large group of traditional designs retails at $199.

The Rug Market IHFC C-209

  • The Rug Market introduces its first group of rugs in the Shabby Chic collection by Rachel Ashwell. The initial designs feature the distinctive Shabby Chic motifs of antique roses and paisleys. Hand hooked in China.

  • Tropical Bamboo is a wool petit point hook featuring rain forest foliage with a bamboo border motif, $299 in 5′ by 8′.

  • Rug Market Kids introduces the Eric Carle collection, a special edition group of rugs with a coordinated bedding ensemble.

Shaw Rugs MS 204

  • Kathy Ireland La Vida Buena collection is a group of nylon printed loop rugs that celebrates the nation's multi-culturalism with a vibrant group of Latino-inspired tile and mosaic designs, $180 in 5′5″ by 7′9″.

  • The new Jack Nicklaus collection is machine woven of 100% wool and features classic Oriental rug designs with subtle golfing motifs, $800 in 5′5″ by 7′9″.

  • The two new Tommy Bahama designs features coastal themes of tropical florals and stylized pineapple patterns. Woven rugs retail at $449 in 5′5″ by 7′9″.

Sphinx By Oriental Weavers IHFC D-312

Trans-Ocean MS 125

  • The Cosmo collection has contemporary organic styling and is hand tufted in India of 50% cotton and 50% wool, $499 in approximate 5′ by 8′.

  • Fireside, Prairie and Pioneer are three groups of wool braids. Fireside ($199 in 5′ by 7′) and Prairie ($299 in approximate 5′ by 10′) are inspired by Americana quilt designs in rectangular shape. Pioneer is a classic oval flat-braid, $199. All are handmade in China.

  • Lafayette collection is made of heat-set polypropylene and Wilton-woven in Belgium, $199 in 4′9″ by 7′4″.

  • Mercer is hand tufted in China of 100% wool, retailing at $299 in approximate 5′ by 8′.

  • The Monterey collection is Wilton woven in Belgium of 100% viscose pile, $299 in approximate 5′ by 7′.

  • Tribeca collection is hand knotted in China of 100% wool and features urban contemporary styling, $499 in 5′ by 7′.

United Weavers SP 3332

United Weavers introduces the Minster collection, based on the design archives of Woodward Grosvenor of Great Britain. The initial introduction includes 20 designs. Of soft-hand polypropylene in million- plus point construction with plush 12 millimeter pile height, $300.
