The furniture store bedding consumer
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, July 25, 2004
High Point — High Point— As with other home furnishings products, Baby Boomers comprise the largest percentage of mattress buyers at furniture stores. But while Boomers make the most buys in furniture stores and lay out the biggest bucks, furniture stores can take heart in the news that the younger generations also think of furniture stores as a mattress buying destination.
Gen Xers, now in their prime family formation years, account for more than one-fourth of furniture store bedding buyers. Gen Yers, between 18 and 28 this year, rival the Baby Boomers in numbers and are just beginning to form their households. They also are going to furniture stores for their bedding.
As for housing, just over four-fifths of furniture store bedding buyers live in a house; 9% live in an apartment; 4% live in a mobile home; and 2% reside in a condo. Slightly more than three-fourths own or are buying their home, and 16% are renters.
Furniture store bedding buyers are spread across the income spectrum, with a slight skew toward those with incomes of less than $75,000.
Hispanic and Asian consumers are underrepresented in the lineup of furniture store bedding buyers. Hispanic households make up only 3% of bedding buyers in furniture stores, but they represent nearly 14% of the population.
Asian households, comprising less than 1% of furniture store bedding buyers and representing just under 5% of the nation's population, have the highest median income of any ethnic group.
Both groups are increasing their populations faster than the nation as a whole.
Married folks make up 70% of furniture store's bedding buyers, but singles account for a significant 30% of households making a mattress purchase in a furniture store.
Slightly more than three-fourths of furniture store bedding buyers have Internet access.
